It’s no easy task growing an independent insurance agency.
It requires a lot of hard work, research, and planning.
To be successful in this industry, you need to know your client’s needs and provide them with the best service possible.
Starting your own agency can be a profitable business…
But it’s risky to get into the field without understanding the industry well.
And I believe that there’s one GIANT mistake alotta agents make…
Going independent is just like starting your own business.
There are a million other factors you gotta get right.
Otherwise, like the majority of businesses started in America…
You’ll be headed for broke inside 3 years.
And while sure, sales are ultimately king when it comes to running a business…
Selling insurance is only one tiny piece of the puzzle.
So you need to have the bulk of this stuff figured out BEFORE you go all-in
Which bring me to an an advice I wish someone told me 10 years ago…
The 3-Year Rule To Grow Your Insurance Agency
Essentially what this rule says is that, if you want to have real success in anything..
Whether that’s growing an independent insurance agency, launching a course, starting a YouTube channel…
Whatever it might be, you have to work under the assumption that it’s gonna take at least 3 years to get any meaningful results.
Put differently, it means
Real, long-term success is built off slow, yet consistent steps
Now, will it actually take 3 whole years?
Probably not.
We always have the power to speed that up by putting in the effort and figuring out ways to work smarter.
But when you assume that things are gonna take 3 years anyway, here’s what I find generally happens…
- The difference between what you actually want to accomplish vs. what’s just another “shiny object” becomes very obvious
- You don’t feel pressured by having to “make it” as soon as humanly possible
- Challenges and obstacles that feel like huge, insurmountable roadblocks become small bumps on the long road
A lot of people get intimidated by the thought of working at something for such a long time…
But if you can actually commit to it, you’d be amazed by the amount of clarity and focus you get as a result.
We simply never know when we’re finally gonna get the big breakthrough we’ve been working towards.
That’s true in just about anything.. But the beauty is that we have two choices on how to react:
1)You can let that make you feel discouraged, like there’s no end in sight…
2) OR you can let it motivate you like hell to work harder and go get whatever it is you’re after.
You see, most people start anything with their ideal results in mind.
For example, when you start your own insurance agency…
We start because we want the lifestyle, right?
Otherwise we’d probably all be stuck in some soul-sucking, 9 to 5 corporate job!
We want that freedom to work when we want… to be responsible for our own incomes.
But it takes work.
And most people will get started and put the grunt work in of growing an independent insurance agency
They’ll lay down the foundations and set themselves up for future success…
But right before that success is about to finally come knockin’ is when they decide “this is taking too long”…
And then they quit!
It’s sad, but this is how a lot of people out there run their lives.
They panic and jump ship the first excuse they get, and it’s often right before all the hard work would’ve paid off.
To grow your insurance agency is NO different!
It’s a marathon, not a sprint.
And whether you’re part of the Fully Covered family or you’re out there rockin’ it on your own…
If you approach things this way (like a marathon) I have no doubts you’ll achieve everything you want to.
The big breakthrough you’ve been looking for could be right around the corner.
And for me, planning out for 2 to 3 years takes a huge amount of weight off my shoulders
Because any time you face a new challenge or feel like you’re hitting a wall, you know that it’s gonna be nothing in the grand scheme of things.
None of this is to say you can’t make big changes in life FAST…
And if you can make it happen, then more power to you. Seriously.
But I think that if you want the most guaranteed path to success to grow your insurance agency
It’s to work hard like you wanted success tomorrow — while also planning to have to work at things for at least 3 years to get to wherever it is you want to be.
